Maths teacher Christy Harp has grown a 1,725lb giant pumpkin. The US woman from Ohio took first place at the Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers’ annual competition recently.

Bad luck road

A driving lesson on Good Luck Road ended in disaster when the learner crashed into an apartment. Police in Lanham, Maryland, say the unlucky accident occurred when a man – who was being taught to drive by his friend – unintentionally crashed his minivan through the wall of Robert Scriber’s home.

Wanted: stolen lung

A human lung has been stolen from a travelling Peruvian body exhibition. The left organ – which had been preserved through a special scientific process which replaces water with stronger polymers – was travelling the world as part of ‘Bodies: The Exhibition’ when it was stolen.

Ghost walk’s spooky ending

A US ghost walk ended on a scary note when a log cabin collapsed on the group. Two walkers – who were members of a local historical society – were injured when the floor of the 164-year-old flooring collapsed in the Toll House, in Germantown, Ohio.

Maggoty nose bleed

A 70-year-old Indian woman had 40 maggots up her nose. The pensioner suffered five days of painful nose bleeds before doctors got to the cause of the problem and removed dozens of the slimy bugs from her nasal cavity.

Over 200 birds died when they were accidentally sucked into an airplane engine. The flock of starlings flew straight into the path of a Germania jet which was taking off from Dusseldorf airport and on its way to Kosovo.

Church attacked by ketchup

A Canadian church has been covered by ketchup and mustard in a bizarre break-in. The religious building in Oakville, Ontario has suffered over £10,000 worth of damage after two men broke in, stole $2,000 sound equipment and covered the walls, pews and pulpit in the brightly-coloured condiments.

Poo kills shrimp?

Tourist poo might have killed off a rare species of Australian shrimp. Wildlife scientist Brian Timms believes people relieving themselves on the summit of Ayers Rock have led to the localised extinction of a small inland fairy shrimp that once lived in pools atop the red landmark
